Catherine Weld

Catherine Weld
‘Inner Moment’
21 August to 20 October, studio exhibition, 20 October to 4 November 2017
Studio open to the public on Mondays and Saturdays

Catherine Weld is a visual artist, investigating ways of expressing the internal sensations of the body, while exploring the physical process of contemporary drawing practices in terms of subject, media and scale. This current body of work is informed by research into the links between physical sensations in the body and their visual expression, through dialogue and collaboration with those, such as dancers, for whom the body is central to their work.

Over this two month residency, Catherine will realise a series of drawings, photographs and animations, with the studio at Uillinn providing her with the space both to focus on these outcomes and to invite conversations and collaborations from the public and other artists. The artist will be inviting the public to join in this process through two events:

Movement and Drawing Workshop, Saturdays 9 & 16 September, 10.30am to 12.30pm Catherine will be joined by Oslo based movement and drama lecturer Nina Harte. During these workshops participants will be led by Nina in simple breath and movement exercises to open them to an increased awareness of their inner body sensations. After each exercise Catherine will facilitate the creation of expressive marks in response to the experience. This will be a quiet and meditative space leading to deepened bodily awareness so that the drawn marks made in response to movement become increasingly true to the felt experience.

Booking is essential as there are limited places. Total fee to participate is €12. There will be an element of progression so participants will need to be available to attend both sessions.

‘Inner Moment’ collaborative drawing project, Mondays and Saturdays from 28 August, 2, 4, 9, 11, 16, 18, 23, 25, 30 September, 10:30am to 12:30pm and 2:00pm – 4:00pm. Participants are invited to stop and take time to tune into their body before making a visual response to their sensations using charcoal, pencil, ink, pen or collage on a shared large scale drawing. Over the course of the residency this will become a collective inner portrait of visitors to Uillinn during that time, and the process will be recorded as a stop motion short film.

This is a free drop-in event open to all visitors to the studio who would like to take part.

Catherine Weld has exhibited widely; amongst other venues, as a painter at the RA in London, the RUA in Belfast and the RHA, Dublin, and as a facilitator of hospice-based, patient-led projects, in London at the Riverside in Hammersmith and The British Museum. Between 2003 and 2011 she was artist in residence at hospices in Dorset, UK and Inverness, Scotland. Her creative aim is to bring the sensation of the subject to the viewer as a direct experience through the physicality of the medium in which she is working: oil paint, charcoal, pencil or anything else that answers the requirements of the moment.
